Our goal is to prevent the spread of HIV and other STD's among youth in Siskiyou County by increasing their knowledge, awareness and skills through prevention education.
Our program is a comprehensive, abstinence-based program reaching on average over 1500, youth each school year. HIV Prevention Education is required to be taught at least once in the 7th or 8th grade and once in the high school grades. Parents or guardians have the opportunity to preview HIV/STD prevention education materials and presentations during a Parent Preview Night. Parents/guardians are able to use this time to make an informed decision as to whether they want their child to participate in the program. Parents/guardians will also receive valuable information in the ongoing dialogue with their child on these important subjects. The HIV Prevention Education program is funded through the Mandated Costs Reimbursement System and grants.
Why is HIV/STD Education important?
• The fastest growing population for HIV infection is the 15-24 year old age group.
• Two teens per hour are infected with HIV in the United States.
• Most HIV infected individuals were infected as a result of their behavior in their teens and early twenties.
• It is required by law in the State of California by SB 71 and Education Code 51930 - 51939.
