Siskiyou County Office of Education (SCOE) was awarded the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Grant, a three year $50,000 grant. The McKinney – Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act protects the educational rights of homeless youth in Siskiyou County.  Often people’s definition of homeless is mistaken. The legal definition is as follows:

An individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, including children and youth who are:

  • Sharing housing due to loss of housing or economic hardship
  • Living in motels, hotels trailer parks, or camping grounds do to lack of alternative adequate housing
  • Living in emergency or transitional housing
  • Awaiting foster care
  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces abandoned buildings, substandard housing, or bus or train stations
  • Public or private  place not designed for sleeping
  • Unaccompanied youth

Children living in these conditions have the right to:

  • Immediately enroll in school with or without the proper documentation or immunization records.
  • Remain in the school of origin for the duration of the academic year.
  • Transportation provided to and from the school of origin.
  • Enroll without having to give a permanent address or proof of residency.

Our goal this year is to:

  • Help schools identify homeless youth
  • Help defray the cost of transportation to and from the school of origin
  • Provide school supplies and backpacks
  • Provide trainings and awareness about families in homeless situations
