Credential Holders
Individuals who hold a California teaching credential may be qualified to work as a substitute teacher if the credential:
- Required a bachelor’s degree and a teacher preparation program, including student teaching.
- Had requirements that were equal to or greater than those required for an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, and the individual passed the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
If you are a credential holder, but this is your initial employment in Siskiyou County, or you have had a break in service with a Siskiyou County School District, you must:
- Comply with the fingerprint requirements and fees outlined in this correspondence.
- Register your credential with this office.
Individuals Without Credentials
Individuals not holding a California teaching credential may be employed as a substitute teacher by applying to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for an Emergency 30-day Substitute Teaching Permit. Applicants must:
- Hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
The Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit authorizes the holder to serve as a substitute teacher for not more than 30 days for any one teacher during a school year in grades 12 and below (including preschool) and in classes organized primarily for adults. It is valid for one year and can be renewed online annually.
