Before the
Forks students, teachers, and community members set off on our
annual mushroom field trip, we were treated to a mushroom
identification slide show by a local expert. We saw
pictures of many different wild and colorful mushrooms. We
did a mushroom anatomy review, to make sure everyone knows gills
from veil and cap from stalk. Once we had that all
straight we headed outside to scour the land for mushrooms!

A local expert
helps students key out a wild mushroom.

This year on
the Forks School Mushroom Field Trip, we found alot of
itty-bitty mushrooms otherwise known as "Little Brown
Jobs" or LBJ's. Two local mycologists accompanied
students and teachers into the field. The students learned
that mushrooms need summer and fall rain to flourish.
Because it was a dry year, we did not find many different kinds
of mushrooms.
